You may not have realized it, but a camping trip in Alberta can include some stellar beach days. Even though it's not a coastal province, Alberta is blessed with  600 freshwater lakes and 245 rivers, most of which are open for public enjoyment. These are a few top Alberta beaches to add to your must-see list, although it's only a small sampling of the vast selection on offer. Keep in mind that the water stays cold most of the year, so the best time to swim is from August to early September.

Sylvan Lake Provincial Park beach

Situated in the town of Sylvan Lake, Alberta, the Sylvan Lake Provincial Park beach is sandy with shallow water, making it ideal for younger swimmers. It's considered by many to be the top beach in Central Alberta, due to its clean water and proximity to convenient amenities. You can bring a picnic and relax on one of the nearby grassy areas, or play a game of beach volleyball. There is a boat launch and marina are at the southwest end of the beach. Be sure to come early if it's a weekend - parking spots tend to fill up fast.

Lake Annette Beach

Tucked away in Jasper National Park, Lake Annette has beaches that amaze visitors every summer. You would be hard-pressed to find a more scenic spot to sunbathe, swim, canoe, paddle-board or go fishing. Keep your eyes peeled for various types of wildlife, you may even see ospreys catching their prey in the lake.

Aspen Beach Provincial Park

This provincial park has a gorgeous beach, and space for larger RVs. Camp at the Lakeview Campground and you can set out in a small powerboat (larger vessels not permitted). There are several shady spots if you need to escape the sun, but many visitors prefer to soak up the rays, have a picnic or splash around in the warm lake with their families. There are shallow areas, so even young swimmers can feel confident enjoying the water.
