Vancouver Islanders find adventure in their own neighbourhood

Vacation at home for fun and savings

It really doesn’t matter how far you travel: it’s the adventure that’s important. Why not stay close to home in a local campground or resort and explore your own backyard this summer? There’s always plenty to see and do and RVers from Vancouver Island can take advantage of the many fun things to do without ever going to the mainland.

Show-and-shine car shows

Antique cars and RVers are an excellent combination. Travelling in their RVs from mid-April into October, hundreds of RVers attend many of the scheduled car shows throughout the province. Car enthusiasts from Vancouver Island are no exception.

A steady flow of motorhomes and every type of RV imaginable travel the Island Highway north from Victoria in anticipation of vintage car shows, swap meets, show-and-shines and even events just for Volkswagens. Almost every community has an attraction that draws a crowd. An added bonus is the ample campgrounds and many RV parks with beach access along the ocean or beautiful forest recreational sites. It’s also a perfect time to reacquaint with fellow car enthusiasts and old friends while exploring the island.

Farmers markets

Most communities have a market where local farmers, street vendors, merchants and artisans sell food, meat, flowers, crafts and a variety of goods high in demand. Spend a Saturday morning enjoying a pancake breakfast or tapping your toes to the variety of tunes played by local musicians as you stroll through the stalls.

Paddling

Surrounded by water, Vancouver Island is a paradise for anyone searching for an exciting ocean paddling experience. Paddle a kayak or canoe smoothly across the water while watching for otters and sea lions in their natural habitat.

The many lakes on the island are great for spending the day paddling on a beautiful summer afternoon or participating in a multi-day excursion. It’s possible to find lakes all over the island and many are part of provincial parks, with beautiful camping availability.

Fishing

Campbell River is considered to be the salmon capital of the world and the community is easily accessible from anywhere on Vancouver Island. Both saltwater and freshwater fishing is popular throughout the island, with many lakes and rivers providing unlimited fishing opportunities. So throw a hook into the water and catch tonight’s dinner.

Golfing

With 40-plus golf courses on Vancouver Island, there are plenty of choices: whether you are experienced or just learning how to hit a ball. Golfing at a spectacular course overlooking the waters of the ocean one day and having fun at a small community course the next is possible. Touring Vancouver Island in your RV and testing out the greens at some of the many courses is a perfect way to spend a vacation.

RVing doesn’t have to mean travelling long distances, because it’s possible to enjoy your adventure within a short distance of your own home. Where we live is considered exotic by visitors from all over the world. Discover why for yourself.
