Top things to see and do in Wetaskiwin
History and western fun combine to make a terrific time
Wetaskiwin is a pleasant community with plenty of things to see and do. Here are just a few of the must-see attractions you can enjoy while in the area.
1) Embrace technology's history
The Reynolds-Alberta Museum is possibly the most famous attraction in town. It is home to more than 100 major exhibits that take visitors on a journey through the evolution of technology in various sectors. There are regular events held here, and the exhibits range from vintage cars to restored machines from Alberta's agricultural history.
2) Awesome aircraft
Canada's Aviation Hall of Fame, an on-site partner of the Reynolds-Alberta Museum, showcases a fantastic collection of aircraft, artifacts and documents that pay tribute to the history of Canadian aviation. During the summer (when weather permits), you can even book a ride in an open cockpit biplane.
3) Learn about Wetaskiwin's heritage
The Wetaskiwin and District Heritage Museum provides visitors with three floors worth of items to see, covering topics such as First Nations history, early local businesses, Hutterite culture and more. The bottom floor hosts the Children's Legacy Centre—perfect for younger visitors who want to take a hands-on approach. The main floor has alternating exhibits, and a permanent Women of Aspenland feature as well. All other permanent exhibits, including The War Years Remembered and other favourites, are on the second floor.
4) Ride the rails
The Alberta Central Railway Museum will give you the chance to take a train ride, enjoy special events and tours, and visit a themed gift shop. The train ride takes place on the restored 1926 Mount Avalanche—in a vintage passenger coach that will take you back in time. You can also learn about the Canadian Pacific Railway and how it affected economic growth in Western Canada.
5) Experience western fun
The Wetaskiwin Agricultural Society proudly hosts several events in town, such as the Youth Fun Fair and 4-H shows and sales. Perhaps the most popular event is the Rawhide Rodeo, which takes place in the summer. The rodeo involves delicious food, vendors, cabarets and, of course, competitions such as steer wrestling and bull riding.
